Things People Say About My Stories
Zoom
Products: Clearly written by a poet of
some skill, this story starts jarringly in the
middle of a scene already in progress, and ends
similarly. Dispensing with any sort of detailed
setup is a technique used to some good effect in
quality speculative fiction, but none that comes
immediately to mind. Nonetheless, the story
features fast dialogue that you can read through
two or even three times to try and make sense of.
The meaning of the piece is suitably obscured
with the identities of the two talking subjects,
and the reader is left to fend for him or herself
here. Juxtaposing the meaningfulness of poetry
with the depth of literature is something that
I've not seen done well very many times, but I
have seen done badly a number of times. Happily,
this was not an obtrusive mixture in the case of
"Zoom Products", and the vague but
halting final concept was refreshing. If you're
in the mood for something that requires a little
bit of grappling, "Zoom Products" is
for you.
"What a
pleasure-ful thing! I thought this was funny,
original and just plain up to the minute good!
Well done. Hope it goes out there and earns you
heaps of response. I could see this in the New
Yorker with its wry humour."
"This has
some real tension in it."
"I love the
overall effect and the ending is excellent."
"My time
spent ploughing through Random Read is unearthing
one little gem after another. Enjoyed this
immensely. Well done."
"Thanks for
the good read."
"Very
intriguing."
"I was
carried away with the powerful storyline."
"Thanks for
that. I was needing a laugh to end the week
on."
